Part of Charley Harper’s Animal Kingdom: A Portfolio of Prints
We do and they do. But while we might think about pink lip gloss or pop singer P!nk, flamingoes think about the pink of a potential partner. The pink pigment of these social birds comes from the proteins in small crustaceans and algae they eat. A robust and nourished flamingo is more vibrantly pink, attracting the opposite sex as a desirable mate. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, and to flamingo eyes, that’s PINK. Whereas people associate pink with femininity, flamingoes are gender benders. Any male flamingo wears his pink shirt proudly, confident in his own skin.
